Thurnscoe walk from Walks Around Britain

Our Walks > North East England > South Yorkshire

A rural landscape in the midst industrial South Yorkshire, this walk takes in two attractive villages Clayton and Hooton Pagnell and the former pit village of Thurnscoe.

We're filming this walk soon, so it isn't ready here yet to watch, but you can still follow the route directions and the map.

Route Directions

  • Starting at Thurnscoe station, turn right along the main road, then right again passing Thurnscoe Centre.

  • Following the narrow lane alongside the railway, cross the bridge over the line and continue to follow the tracks - then cross over at the next bridge.

  • Another footbridge is ahead after keeping to the right hand edge of the field.

  • This path bears right following the hedge and a low-down waymarked post shows where the trek crosses to the other side of the hedge.

  • After a short distance, the path goes back to the left side of the hedge and continues into Clayton village.

  • Turn right along the village's main street to the war memorial and the duck pond.

  • Go down Tan Pit Lane and bear straight on at the fork in the lane. After the last house, take the stile and head up the path on the right hand side of the hedge to a wide track.

  • Turn right here and avoid the track and the stile. Instead, cross the railway and then after the house bear left.

  • The track passes between buildings and becomes metalled. Keep straight on at the crossing of the tracks and then curve right after passing the entrance to Frickley Hall.

  • Turn left down the lane and pass through a belt of trees, immediately taking the stile on the right.

  • Following the field edge, cross the track and bear right to the corner of the field at the wall. Pass through the thick hedge and bear slightly left to the waymarked stile.

  • Cross the course of the old railway and then in the field, cross corner and turn right along the edge of the wood. Join a pebbled path and follow it to the road.

  • Turn right, pass under the railway bridge and take the signed path on the left. Pass the yellow post, cross the footbridge and keep parallel to the left edge of the field. A waymarker show the way through the wood once the isolated tree has been passed.

  • Bear straight on towards the houses, passing a group of trees on their left, then go a few yards left to find the way to the road.

  • Turn left to visit Hooton Pagnell. Once ready to leave, turn around, and go past the turning for Brodsworth on the left. As the road turns a sharp left, carry on along the path and follow its curves until the path takes a sharp left and continues just inside the wood.

  • Follow the field edges past the stile to Stotfold.

  • Follow the access track but where it goes left, head right on the path between the concrete blocks.

  • An opening of the left passes to a grassed area. Continue on the right side of the pond to a car park.

  • At the exit, turn left to the road and then right to return to the railway station.
